Mohinders began when Michael Paratore quit his day job as a lawyer to search through India, trying to find the people who made his favorite pair of shoes.
When Michael quit his job as a corporate lawyer to become a shoe peddler, he wanted to turn an amazing shoe find into a full-fledged business — but only if he could do it in a way that reflected a few core values:
- Create well-designed, wearable, long lasting products
- Keep our production with the place and people who are part of the history of this particular design (rather than re-creating a heritage design somewhere else, or in a cheaper method)
- Pay attention to environmental and social impact at every step of our supply chain, with the acknowledgement that we still have questions to investigate
- Do business directly with artisans. Respect artisans’ agency by paying prices set by them (in addition to continually evaluating these prices are fair and sufficient with in-person visits and conversations)
Based in San Francisco, Michael and creative director Kristen Morabito do their best to uphold these values in everything about Mohinders. They create distinctive products, share the Mohinders story, and keep curiosity and a ready-for-anything approach at the center of everything they do.
